As a manager, I confirm this message. You’re whole quarter of work is half a page doc that is a couple of bullet points with, mostly, your impact and growth areas. The size of the performance card is enforced by the organization, we cannot go over that. The conversation is 5 to 15 minutes. So be impactful.

The method to fire the person you least care for is really ilogic and some times lead to disaster. If the person does not have a good relationship with management but is key for company process, you are letting someone go who is vital for the company. The coworkers that stayed will get overwhelmed with tasks and will eventually leave on their own.

Is there an objective metric you are required to evaluate candidates on as a hiring manager? In other words, could you in theory have hired this candidate anyway or is there an HR initiative that says, "candidate must score X points in technical interviews"?

Golden Gate Capital didn't risk anything. They sold all the land that were owned by all the Red Lobster chains to another company that they own. So now Red Lobsters are paying those company rent which all goes to Golden Gate Capital. And when Red Lobsters declared bankruptcy, Golden Gate Capital get all the tax breaks. They don't care if Red Lobsters survives. If Red Lobsters all close off they can rent those same land and stores to other businesses. It's the land ownership that Golden Gate Capital were after.

Your videos are priceless. Thank you. I’m a faang senior swe but I still struggle with time / energy management and juggling side projects. Trading money for time is good advice but cooking is a personal hobby for me so I like doing it. However it’s important not to waste too much time doing these routine tasks. I realized that cooking is a luxury for me and sometimes it’s not worth it or practical to do it every day. Sometimes I’d spend 2 hours in the kitchen then be exhausted after everything is cleaned up and put away. Meal prep in advance and eat at work if possible.

What I learned about money: 1. If you have enough money, you don't need more money.

Before watching video: my guesses are 1) have enough money to not feel perpetual, impending doom of hustle modernity 2) have life partner to help. edit: lmfao pretty much hit the nail on the head, except I forgot to add 3) execute on popular productivity techniques we all know. I'm just giving real feedback here. I watch your channel because I also seek to 'engineer' my life. I have read atomic habits and deep work like everyone else that is interested in productivity hacking. I might just not be your proper audience, but a lot of this is borderline insulting fluff. It was about 7m in before you got to any real substance and that was after an advertisement. A couple of your videos have come off this way. I have to unsub when videos feel like a waste of my time.

I was a tech lead at Amazon with a principal engineer that was doing some of the things you talked about. From the lower level engineers its an awful experience, we would invite our pe to meetings and they would decline or leave early. Our questions never got answered, he never really understood what we were even working on. He got high ratings by playing politics not by providing value. I dont know quite how well that strategy really works outside of Amazon to be honest. An Amazon pe is kind of a perfect role for a person to fade away and act busy in.

I’m 52 hoping to end the rat race by 60 with above $1M. I know money is a liability to be exchanged for assets with real value like real estate (properties for rent) stocks (dividends) bonds (interest) But, what is it with bitcoin? I hear a lot about it and I'd love to diversify my portfolio.

Of course, I wish you success, but here is how your asymmetric risk can become not so much so: 1. Somehow, your YT channel does not succeed. You invest more good money after bad, but it does not work. You lose a significant part of your savings. 2. As a principal engineer, it will be difficult to get a job at this level, because not many such positions are available and you are overqualified for more 'junior' positions. You can't return to your cushy job. 3. After some time out of tech, you lose your edge, you don't have experience in X or Y. Since you've worked for 18 years, you can no longer quickly solve those pesky Leetcode type questions, as you'd be rusty. It becomes challenging to return to tech.

I’m in a similar boat. I’m 25, have a senior SWE job at a big tech, hundreds of thousands in net worth. But, I’m also resigning soon for similar reasons. I’m going to create a startup. The risk is low (I have no dependents, so worst case scenario I burn some cash, everything fails, and I rejoin big tech in a few years. This will delay my retirement by a few years). But the upside is uncapped. And it’s a 2 way door. It might be higher risk than what you’re doing but still I think the time is right for me!
